Sitrang set to hit Bangladesh coast today; Kolkata starts feeling impact.
Cyclone Sitrang is set to strike the Bangladesh coast early on Monday, although Kolkata started getting rain late on Sunday evening with some parts of the city receiving light showers. The rain is set to get heavier and continue till Tuesday afternoon, said the Met office. The cyclone is set to hit land between Tinkona Island and Sandweep in Bangladesh, close to Barishal. While the coastal areas of Bengal may be lashed by winds at 100kmph, the wind speed in the city is unlikely to cross 50kmph, said weathermen. But the rain and the wind may cause considerable damage to the Sundarbans, which could be the worst-affected in Bengal. A lot of damage to embankments and houses is feared, and electricity lines could be snapped across the islands, and the place could witness large-scale inundation and destruction of crops, the Met office said.
